When dispensing oil from a tin can, why do we usually make TWO holes in the tin can?

Answer 1

To allow ingress of air AS WELL as displacement of the liquid.

Before ring pull cans were invented, you had to use a tin opener to make two holes in a soft drink can: one for drinking and the other for allowing air to enter and displace the liquid inside. If you only made one hole, the liquid would exit the can in a broken pattern, with some of the liquid flowing out, stopping, and then briefly restarting.

Make one hole in the lid and observe how the water flows out; if you have an empty jam jar with a metal lid, you can perform the experiment yourself. Of course, the two holes will be even more crucial to promote even flow for a viscous liquid like oil.

Making two holes in a tin can when dispensing oil allows air to enter the can, which prevents glugging and facilitates a smooth flow of oil.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
