How is gold metal extracted by treatment with cyanide anion, and dioxygen gas?

Answer 1

I think that this is the cyanidation process, that is practised on a very large scale, but which is very suspect environmentally. So the anion is cyanide, #N-=C^-#.

I believe the Au(I) bound to cyanide is given by using oxygen gas as the oxidant in the process.

#4Au + 8NaC-=N + O_2 + 2H_2O rarr 4Na[Au(C-=N)_2] + 4NaOH#

Of course, the price of gold makes this economically viable, but it's remarkable that this is an economically viable process considering that it uses relatively low grade ore and could have enormous environmental costs.

When evaluating a one-sided limit, you need to be careful when a quantity is approaching zero since its sign is different depending on which way it is approaching zero from. Let us look at some examples.
